The Alcatel One Touch 2000 is a basic feature phone primarily targeted to the elderly or to those who want a simple mobile user experience. The device includes accessibility features that render it suitable for people with low vision, hearing disabilities or poor comprehension skills. Amovil was able to review this handset thanks to a loan by the Vodafone Spain Foundation.

This phone measures 112 x 61.5 x 12.8 mm and weighs 89 grams which makes it very ergonomic. It has a 2.4-inch TFT non touchscreen display with 320 x 240 pixels resolution that shows large screen and fonts. It also has a very simple menu that includes a calculator, alarm, phone book, and LED flashlight. In addition, it comes with large buttons and features such as Bluetooth technology, Radio FM, and hands-free, among others.

Furthermore, this model has a single click emergency button on the back of the device that is activated with a long press. The phone sets an alarm off, and tries to connect with five preset numbers in succession until someone picks up. It will also send a text message to each call recipient.

Accessibility review

Vision

Because this phone lacks a screen reader, it is unsuitable for blind people. These users will not be able to get access to the menu.

However, it may be adequate for users with low vision. It comes with a 3 x 3 standard numeric keypad with large tactile keys with a voice-on-touch feature that speaks out loud the keys being pressed.

Hearing

According to Alcatel, this phone has a hearing aid compatibility rating of M3/T4. This means users can use it with their hearing aids or cochlear implants both on the microphone and T-coil modes. The phone also supports text messages. However, Deaf users will not be able to make video calls as this device includes no cameras.

Dexterity

This handset is suitable for people with mild dexterity disabilities. It comes with a predictive text and speed dialing features, a simple locking and unlocking system, and hands free calling features, among others.

However, with little or no manual dexterity skills may not be able to use this phone. The handset is not compatible with speech recognition software that would enable them control it with their voices. In addition, the phone offers no possibility to control it with assistive devices such as styluses, headwands or mouth sticks.

Comprehension

The Alcatel 2000 has been designed with usability in mind so it may be suitable to people with certain cognitive disabilities. In addition, the menu icons are standardized and easy to recognize, and the phone book is perfectly customizable.
