The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 in white

The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is a mid-range affordable smartphone that runs on Android 4.3. Because it’s slightly smaller than the Galaxy Note II, some experts consider it a “phablet”, that is a hybrid between a smartphone and a tablet. The handset comes equipped with several state of the art features built-in, and accommodates the needs of people with visual disability, and poor comprehension skills.

This device measures 146.8 x75.3x8.9 mm, weighs 163 grams, and sports an outer design that resembles the rest of the Galaxy series. It also features a 5.25-inch TFT capacitive display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. It also includes a rear-side 8MP camera with autofocus and Led flash, and a front-side 1.9 MP camera for videocalls. Additionally, it provides support for Bluetooth, Wifi, Wifi-direct and 4G networks.

Accessibility review

Vision

The Galaxy Grand 2 is suitable for people with visual disabilities. It includes a version of TalkBack, Android's built-in screen reader, that read these users through the entire visual content. Also, the options to adjust font size and type and to invert colors work rather well. In fact, those with low vision will be able to use this device with comfort.

Hearing

The Galaxy Grand 2 supports instant messaging and video calls. Because there is no information available on this device’s compatibility with hearing aids, Amóvil is unable to recommend it to hearing aid users. However, those with Bluetooth-enabled hearing prosthetics may be able to connect to this device using this technology.

Dexterity

Amóvil cannot recommend this device to people lacking dexterity skills because the voice recognition feature included does not work as expected.

Notwithstanding, it includes a few features that may enhance the experience of these users especially of those with poor dexterity skills, such as the hands free and the auto answer features. In addition, these users may be able to control some features with mouthsticks or headwands.

Comprehension

The Galaxy Grand 2 is suitable for people with limited comprehension skills. It includes standardized icons and symbols, and an option to customize the phone book and to arrange the home screen elements as needed. In addition, it supports two home screen modes: standard and easy modes. The easy mode limits the home screen to three panels and provides bigger icons and fonts. It also provides an easier way to pin frequent contact and favorite apps to the home screen.
