La tableta Huawei MediaPad 10 Link

Amóvil has been able to review the Chinese-made tablet Huawei MediaPad 10 Link, thanks to a loan by Orange. Although, it is not very ergonomic due to its weight and dimensions, this Tablet it may offer a satisfactory experience to some users. In fact, it accommodates the needs of people with visual disabilities and profound hearing loss.

Running on Android v4.1, the Mediapad 10 Link is equipped with a 10.1-inch IPS LCD capacitive display that supports inputs with up to ten fingers at the same time. It also has 1280x800 pixels resolution. In addition, it includes a 3.15 MP rear-side camera and a VGA front-side camera for videocalls. The device provides support for Bluetooth, GPS and has a storage capacity of 16 GB expandable up to 32 GB with micro SD card.

Accessibility review

Vision

This Tablet includes a screen reader that works quite well, rendering it accessible for blind users. In addition, its 10—inch display makes it easy for users with low vision to see and interact with its content. It also allows them to customize the size and type of fonts to meet their needs.

However, color blind users may have a limited experience with this device as it does not provide a high contrast theme or a mechanism to invert colors. Another barrier observed that may affect users with low vision is that it lacks a screen magnifier.

Hearing

The Media Pad 10 link is not compatible with hearing aids. Although, the device does not support phone calls, hearing aid users can benefit from listening to multimedia sounds using their hearing prosthetics. However, users with profound hearing loss may have a satisfactory experience as this tablet supports both instant messaging and videocalls.

Dexterity

Amóvil cannot recommend this device to users with dexterity disabilities because it lacks a proper voice recognition system that would allow them interact with it using their voices only. They would need to download a third party application compatible with Android that offers this service, such as Sherpa, to be able to use it.

Users with severe dexterity disabilities may be able to control some functions with assistive devices such as mouth sticks or head wands, albeit limited.

Comprehension skills

The MediaPad 10 Link is unsuitable to people with limited comprehension skills. On one hand, the design of some icons is not very easy to identify and a few do not comply with accessibility standards. On the other, instructions are written in a complex language making the learning experience difficult for these users.
