The Alcatel One Touch Pop C7 is an affordable and entry-level smartphone ideal for people who want to become familiar with Android operating system. It is also a powerful device that offers a few interesting features, and accommodates the needs of the blind and the hearing impaired. Amóvil was able to review this device thanks to a loan by the Vodafone Spain Foundation.

This Acaltel model is quite large and slim measuring 141 x 71.8 x 9.9 mm and weighing 140 grams. It runs on Android 4.2.2 and includes a 5-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480 x854 pixels (196 ppi). The device also features a 5MP basic rear-side camera and a front-side VGA camera for videocalls. Regarding connectivity, it supports GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi and Wifi direct.

Accessibility review

Vision

This Smartphone comes with a version of TalkBack that works rather well. However, a few minor issues were detected during the testing. The screen reader was unable to identify some text and images in some native apps such as the calendar probably due to improper labeling.

People with low vision may not be able to use this device with comfort. Although it comes with an inbuilt screen magnifier, these users may have difficulties customizing the size and type of fonts to meet their needs as this feature works in some interfaces only. Another barrier observed is that it lacks a mechanism to reverse the display colors to improve visibility.

Hearing

The One Touch PoP C7 has a hearing aid compatibility rating of M3. However, an inductive loopset is needed to be able to use it in the T-coil mode. This handset supports instant message and videocalls for the Deaf.

Dexterity

The Pop C7 is unsuitable for users with dexterity disabilities. The voice recognition system built-in is insufficient. In addition, the touch area of some icons may not large enough to allow a precise touch. While it is possible to control some of the features available in this handset with assistive devices (mouth stick headwands, etc.) these users may not be able to press the power button.

Comprehension

Amóvil cannot recommend the PoP C7 to users with poor comprehension skills because icons do not comply with international standards. Also, configuration instructions are written in a complex language and include technical jargon. In addition, the device’s user manual available does not conform to the WCAG 2.0.
